Successful people aren’t afraid to make mistakes
admin | October 19, 2006In the most recent episode of G’day World; Cameron Reilly, Richard Giles and Tony Goodson were talking about successful people and how they make their own luck. One important point really stood out to me:
Successful people aren’t afraid to put themselves out there and make an arse of themselves.
This is a major problem for me. I’m the person who when confronted with a crowded room sits in a corner and avoids eye contact. I’m also a perfectionist and I won’t try something if I don’t think I can be great at it straight away. The few times I have put myself out there and had a go at something I thought I’d suck at I’ve discovered a talent I never knew I had.
So now I have a new goal. To stop caring about what everyone else thinks and just go after my dreams and to stop being so damned shy. If I continue over thinking everything my opportunities will disappear before I realise they’re there.
Edit: Wow its my 100th post. Rather appropriate really 
2 questions I would ask:
- What (in your mind) is success?
and 2 – Shy / Sitting in the corner / avoiding eye contact – why? We do these things for a reason. What’s yours?
How does being shy contrast with writing 100 blogs???
I think you can be shy and write a lot of blogs! I think I am a perfect example of this (some might laugh if they read my comments and the likes). I write a little bit of stuff on the net but get me in a room full of people and I tend to move to the corners and be fairly quiet. The net is like your security blank. Not that I feel I can talk from an anonymous stand point (I would argue I am less anonymous on the net then in person as you can track me back on the net) but I can talk on my terms and on Subjects I choose.

I’m shy firstly because I got beaten up a lot as a kid and secondly because I overreact emotionally so I’m always afraid I’m going to make an arse of myself by crying over some stupid criticism from a stranger

My question based on ure post is – why am I not a LOT more successful…?
Miriam, would you react differently from a negative comment on the net than in RL?
Seems a lot of us are shy in RL, probably why we use blogs
Nah I’m just as likely to cry over criticism on the net. I’m more confident on the net because no one can see me if I cry
well mim once you start doing something you really REALLY believe in, you might find that criticism from other affects you less. If you know the world is round and everyone tells you it’s flat and you’re an idiot for thinking it’s round, are you going to cry or just shrug them off as being “less informed” (that’s my new political correct way of calling someone a retard that I’ve learned from 48 hours in LA).
my view is you should get a grip and get over it and enjoy life while you are still care free. You have a whole life to get complicated why not do it when you are old?
